A few Treats

I have been busy with vacationing and planning and taking care of peeps, so, consequently, not much in the way of sewing action. 

I decided on a quick little project for some sewing peeps of mine.

They are about 3 x 3 square with some custon twill on the sides.

Been wanting to try this thimble for quite awhile.

Hope it does what I want. Will update... as only time will tell.

Picked up this lightweight patterned denim for my Darling Ranges dress.

I've been wanting to complete this for-ev-er. The store only had a tad over 2 yards. It is 60" wide, so I think I have enough......just barely. 
Still need to tweak the bodice....

Gonna give spray basting a try on a table runner that needs quilting.

The MIL wants a tiered boho skirt, so that needs some fabric choices and layer width choices.

Finally, completely, done!

The last of the nightstand got finished today...a new hole drilled for the knob. The hubs said I needed to coat the drawer sides, so I did that. Now, it's official and will be put back in my room, minutes from now!!

I turned it upside-down to reattach the top and I noticed that I was not a great painter. hahaha

Touch ups are done, now I have to wait at least 24 hours before I can put the drawer back in.

It feels good to finish this first step in my epic bedroom makeover!!

After the holidays, I just may paint my armoire........

Next stop on the makeover....headboard.

Night Stand Progress

I'm getting closer! The primer is done...two coats. I used a sponge instead of a bristle brush. I may brush the final coat.....We'll see.

I am letting this dry over night then I will do a light sanding with some 220 grit paper and then ..eeeeeee....apply the burnt peanut red!

As you can see, the primer looks a little pink.

Here it is next to the final color. It's gonna be awesome!!!!

My spackle technique needs some serious work and I think I kept the drips to a minimum. I just hope there is no green showing when I'm done. LOL

I think I will be picking out a new knob too. The little white ceramic is nice, but I am leaning toward a brushed/antiques nickle cup pull.

Something about the size of the fourth one from the top in the middle but more antiquing looking like the very top one. I'll take the drawer with me to the hardware store and see what looks the best.

Oh noooo, That means I have to drill two new holes.......

Tutorial: How to get a nice clean corner on a fleece blanket.

Several years ago I saw a sewing tip in Threads magazine. It was for making nice, clean corners and hems on napkins. I adapted this technique to making a single fold on fleece. Who ever thought of the original technique was a genius!  

No more doubled folded corners for me!!! 

No more extra bulk!! 

No more itsy bitsy thread tails on the edges!! 

I am making several fleece blankies as gifts, so I thought I would share how I get a nice, clean, finished edge and a lovely mitered corner. 

If your fabric has a ''good'' side. make sure that faces away from you.  Annnddddddd, make sure you do all your corners the same direction....ask me how I know that! LOL 

Trim off the selvedges and make your blankie piece all even.

Decide how wide you want you hem to be. Pin first side.

Do the same to the second side.

 Use tailor's tacks to mark the outside corner and where the fabric meets on the inside corners

 Open. If you corner is not visable enough for you, add another tack.

Fold right sides together having the inside corner marks meet and the corner is a nice, sharp point.

Pin

Sew from thread to thread. You will end up with a triangle

See, triangle

Fold it under and see if it all worked out....ta daaaa

Open it back up, trim off the excess triangle and pull out your thread tacks

Taaa daaaaaaaaa

I use a zig zag stitch to hold down my hem.  

And I start my stitching a few inches before a corner for a nice clean stitching line.

Inside 

Outside (or ''good'' side)

No thread tails hanging off the edge. 

No uneven, lumpy, bumpy edge.

Wow, it still amazes me every time!!

Started the nightstand in the Big Bedroom Redo

Finally, I am getting started on my bedroom redo. My inspiration was a red bedroom in Country Living Magazine.

 
I've never painted a piece of furniture ......ever 



My sojourn begins.....


















The first project is my nightstand. See my daughter's lovely sharpie scrawl? It's been there for y e a r s

 First, I took all the removable pieces off

The I started sanding with 100 grit sandpaper. Just a light sanding is all that is needed (or so the hubs told me) As I was sanding, I noticed a crack and some minor dents. The hubs said it gave it character but I decided I needed to learn to patch things

So I filled this crack and a few of the leg dings.

 

Tomorrow, I finish sanding and put on my first coat of......BURNT PEANUT RED.
I will miss having my nightstand for a few day. I guess a chair will have to do for another day or two. 
My next projects for this room will be to pick a wall color and make a padded headboard with a removable slipcover. I saw one online somewhere (before pinterest) with buttons going down both sides but I can't find it again....drat! I'm thinking toile like the foot stool???

Paint my night stand. I know, I know! I am a sewista, not a painter so this is gonna be a new and exciting adventure for me! I will be posting my progress as it happens.

The night stand, complete with my daughter's sharpie art from oohhhhh so long ago.

Now, do I keep the little porcelain knob or get something new? Maybe a brushed nickle finish? 
One step at a time, I finally found a paint color I like.
Now, to learn how to paint, properly, today!!!  LOL
And for the record, I would LOVE my closet doors to look just like the big, red picture!! 
Talking the hubs into a red room, that is going to be a challenge....I am soooooo up for it!
